Maybe … sounds a bit facile.  What about the ARM-based units?

ReadyNAS Product Line Comparisons

These guys have a fantastically complicated product line.  It’s been around since Ajump, Infrant; NetGear now runs it.  It’s never quite clear what you’re buying and whether the box-on-the-shelf in front of you (or in the online store) is current or discontinued or what.  The published specifications are a little vague on a lot of the high-end capabilities.  Unfortunately, that means you “learn by experience” when you buy a unit and discover the user base / feature set that the model was tuned for.  Drive one before you buy one; good advice in all realms.

ReadyNAS NV+ (v1, sparc) is discontinued, there will be no IPv6

There is no IPv6 for the ReadyNAS NV (v1)
Question: what firmware update will supply it.
Answer: no such update will ever exist.
Reference: IPV6 support for NV+; By mdgm; In the ReadyNAS Community Forum; 2012-07-04.

Therefore: avoid the ReadyNAS NV+ (v1, sparc)

Stick with ReadyNAS “Ultra” or “Pro” (v2, x86, Atom)

Folklore

NFS Support

The ReadyNAS NFS “just works.”   This is unlike the Western Digital ShareSpace which has weird omissions that cause application-level problems; some are showstoppers.  ReadyNAS NFS has:

  • NFS v3, tcp
  • Appropriate NFS protocol negotiation at mount.
  • IPv6 seems to be “enableable” on the RNDU4000 (unclear what that means).
  • NFS v4 from a Fedora client’ has

Root Access

  • Configurable to add no_root_squash from the (FrontView GUI)
  • Configurable to a CIDR network; e.g. 192.168.135.0/24
BUT this seems to have been removed on RAIDiator 5-series as experienced on the ReadyNAS NV+ v2 (RNDU4000-200NAS)

SSH Access

  • Available, by factory add-on, but untested
  • Voids warranty, apparently
